Learning...with Style ! Golfing...with Style!

Coaching Recommendations

Individuals differ from one another in the manner in which they prefer to acquire knowledge and skills during the learning process. The inventory identifies and categorizes these preferences according to three modes of learning. The Noetic Mode focuses attention on the acquisition of knowledge and skills via intuition (feeling), the Empirical Mode, via the senses (doing) and the Rational Mode, via reasoning (thinking). No one functions exclusively in any one of these three modes. Rather, individuals vary in the degree to which each mode is represented in their personal blend of the three modes that make up their golf style. Identification of your golf style will enable the golf professional to tailor instruction to your learning preferences. Amanda's results on the GSI, as depicted by the graph above, indicate a very strong preference for the Noetic Mode when learning new material. The result also show little preference for either the Empirical or Rational Modes.

As a learner...

Amanda is a receptive listener who tends to be expressive and spontaneous. She enjoys the company of others and functions well in group situations where the learning process is shared. She values a caring, warm and supportive environment. She prefers to learn through means which are intuitive, creative, meaningful and unstructured. When learning new skills, she needs to experience the feel for the whole movement. She has little interest in analytical details or in-depth descriptions of logical principles embedded in instructional content.

As a consumer...

Amanda will most likely manifest the following behavior which are generally found among persons belonging to the Noetic Dominant typology. They are friendly, approachable and enjoy people's company. They are very sensitive to feelings and are quite willing to understand other points of view. They are not enamored with instructor centered presentations preferring instead a more "give and take" approach. They enjoy dealing with people who show a warm friendliness and are enthusiastic, even humorous. They often buy on impulse and can easily make decisions based on intuition and how they feel about something. Because they are emotion-driven, they tend to be influenced by the visual. For those reasons aesthetics, style, feel and comfort will be the strongest influences in their decision-making process.

Prescription for Coaching

Overall Plan:

Lesson plan should be based on learner described needs. Make it obvious that Amanda’s expressed needs have been considered and will be attended to.

Instructor/Student Ratio:

Amanda works best in small group setting where sharing of experience is encouraged.

Lesson Sequence

Lesson order should be dependent upon her needs. That is, it should be personal and responsive. She will appreciate a consultative and supportive teaching approach rather than one which is structured and preplanned.

Learning Aids:

Learning aids should involve biographies about great golfers, music for rhythm, analogies such as catching a ball or riding a bike. Remember she learns best when you say "it's just like".

Communication Style:

The predominant communication mode should involve interactive discussion using verbal, tactile and kinesthetic ("feels like") analogies and metaphors. That is to say, choose a communicative approach which allows Amanda to get a "feel" for the correct action. Observation techniques and verbal presentations/explanations should be minimized.

Motivation:

Begin instruction by establishing an atmosphere which is friendly, enjoyable and supportive. Use personal anecdotes and interactive dialogue to help create this warm learning environment.

Reinforcement and Rewards:

Reinforcement and Rewards should be based on Amanda's personal assessment of being able to feel inwardly the execution of the movement. When Amanda says, "I can feel it!", you should respond with encouragement. Appropriate rewards should include such things as pats on the back and warm supportive statements.

Practice:

Practice should focus on allowing her to experience the feel for the whole skill. Practice should provide a variety of activities and cater to Amanda's natural tendency to be creative.

Question:

Amanda should be actively encouraged to ask questions whenever they arise. Remember, instruction is a response to her expressed needs.

In addition, Amanda's characteristics and preferences need to be addressed in order for her to be totally satisfied as a thoughful consumer of golf services.
